How to Make Your Instagram a Business Account

Let’s get personal for a moment; with your Instagram account that is. Instagram is one of the most powerful social media tools for brands. However, to tap into the full potential and reap all the benefits Instagram has to offer, you’ll need to make sure that you are engaging with a professional account. Here, you'll discover the benefits of a business account and how to set yours up!

Why an Instagram Business Account is Perfect For You

When it comes to Instagram, one size doesn’t fit all. There are three profile types users can have on the platform. The first type, personal, is the default everyone starts with when they open an account. Then, users have the option to change their profile to either a business or creator account. Though this article is focused on creating and using a business account on Instagram, let’s first go over the basics of personal and creator accounts.

Personal Accounts

When you sign up to use Instagram, you will automatically have a personal account. Depending on your social media goals, this may be the right account for you. For example, if your activities are personal and you want to keep your content private, a personal account is the only one that will allow this. This type of account will not provide you with analytics and you will not be able to collaborate with other accounts and access branded content. It does however grant users access to the full music library for Stories and Reels which is a big plus.

This is a great account for personal, social interactions where you aren’t measuring your content performance. However, if you are using Instagram to grow your brand and even striving to become an influencer earning income on the platform, you will want to change to a business or creator account.

Creator Accounts

A creator account on Instagram is great for people who are creating content, for themselves or brands, which is not focused on selling products. Thus, this is the preferred account for many influencers, public figures, artists and producers. This account type provides access to analytics and branded content features. One big benefit exclusive to creator accounts is access to a full music library. This is Instagram’s newest profile type and there are several pros and cons to consider before making the switch so you can ensure it’s the right one for you.

Business Accounts

Brands connecting with a public audience and selling products or services are best served with a business account. With a business account, users have access to analytics, branded content features, interactive stickers, contact buttons and the ability to connect their account in the Facebook Creator Studio. And when you have a business account, you are in good company. According to Instagram, users visit more than 200 million business accounts on the platform daily and many are there to shop.

Instagram Shopping is a feature built into the app which converts your account into a social, virtual storefront. Once your shop is set up, users can browse and check out right there in the app. Ready to get started? First, you’ll need to make sure you have a business account.

Converting From Personal to Business Account

Once you are signed up with Instagram and have selected your username, completed your bio, and picked the perfect profile pic, you’ll want to convert the account from personal to business.

  • Step 1: From the home screen, tap your profile icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Step 2: Then, click the three horizontal lines in the top right corner. From here, select “settings,” then “account. ”
  • Step 3: Then, You will scroll down and tap “switch account type," Tap it and “switch to a business account.” It really is that easy! And should your goals ever change, you can always change to a different account type at any time.
