Going back to work after a long holiday break is tough for everyone, but there are ways to help alleviate the struggle. We've taken it upon ourselves to offer some tried and true strategies that will ease the transition. Get back into your workflow after the holidays sooner than later; the hustle is hard but worth it.
Even if you're not a list person, writing your to-do list down on paper will make a huge difference, especially with your mind a little foggy from the holidays. There's something about visually seeing your tasks and crossing them off that helps with efficiency and productivity. You might forget something on a to-do list in your mind, but you won't be able to forget it on paper. It's also very gratifying to see a list completely marked off, showing that all of your tasks are complete.
While this may not sound appealing at first, it will certainly pay off later. By waking up earlier the first week or two after the holidays, you'll have a chance to catch up on everything you missed without having to stay at the office super late. Having time in the morning to wake up slowly, make breakfast, and stop by your favorite coffee shop will also give you the stamina to make it through the day. You could even form a new habit, and maintain an earlier schedule throughout the year. Everyone could use more time in the day.
With the new year approaching, now is a perfect time to relieve the clutter and simplify your life. We would suggest cleaning out your inbox and desk first. When your space is clean, your mind will be free to focus and get work done more efficiently. By keeping your surroundings uncluttered, you will have fewer distractions and incorporate more zen in your life.
A healthy body goes along with a healthy mind and life. Getting back into your workflow will be easier if you are making healthy choices, which includes getting enough rest and exercise. For instance, you don't need to attend every after-work happy hour. Mix up your routine by trying out a new exercise class with a pal or taking your dog for a walk. Always eat a good breakfast and pack healthy lunches a few times a week to save money and get the nutrition you need.
Aside from getting enough sleep every night, find out what relaxes you. That could mean going to yoga, taking a long walk, writing in your journal, reading a good book, or cooking your favorite meal. Make sure you have at least one or two nights a week to unplug from the world and recharge yourself. Quiet time is more necessary than most people realize for maintaining a sound mind. Getting enough rest is essential for transitioning back into your normal workflow.
Planning ahead is key to getting back into the swing of things at work. Creating a robust and realistic plan for the first of the new year will help you achieve your goals. Plus, you'll feel more organized and less chaotic when you know exactly when and how you need to get things done.
